Some interesting facts about Clementi
Named after Sir Cecil Clementi Smith, the Governor of the Straits Settlement from 1887 to 1893, Clementi is one of the more accessible neighbourhoods in the Western region of Singapore. It’s hard to imagine but it’s true.
Did you know part of Clementi used to be swampland while the other part consisted of kampungs and villages filled with squatter-type homes, cottage industries, backyard trades, and farms?
Nestled between Dover and Jurong West, today’s Clementi is home to private and HDB residents, shopping malls, specialty stores, food centres, parks, transportation facilities, recreational facilities and more. The three major malls in the area are Clementi Mall, 321 Clementi and West Coast Plaza.
Schools like NUS High School of Mathematics and Science (affiliated to the National University of Singapore (NUS)), Nan Hua High School, Clementi Primary School and the Japanese Supplementary School are nestled in the region, as are tertiary educational institutions such as the National University of Singapore and Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

Want to see a piece of history in real life? Check out the Old Jurong Line Railway Bridge, a relic in Clementi that exists as one of the illustrious railway’s last remains. While it is closed to the public due to the state it is in, you can still snap pictures of it from the surrounding area.
Foodies are in for a treat as Clementi is famous for the array of food available at Ayer Rajah Food Centre & Market, authentic Burmese food, as well as Chai Ho Satay. The latter offers inexpensive but stellar satay; its store is always fronted with a long queue!
